The Science of Opposites

The science of opposites where we aim to explore the opposite of every noun in the English language.

Nouns don't tend to have opposites - words like knife, pen, house, car and phone are somehow more complete when you find their logical partner.

Register and play your part in solving one of language's great mysteries. If we all do 1 noun each, we'll have this finished in no time.

This article discusses the union of opposites as a personal and social philosophy, from the dual perspective of Eastern Taoism and process theory (Sabelli, 1989; Sabelli et at., 1997). Taoism, as Greek physiology and modern science, regards the laws of nature as the best criterion for human behavior. Striking parallels between modern physics and the insights of Eastern philosophy have been found (Capra, 1975; Prigogine, 1995; Sabelli, 1989; Rhee, 1996). Bohr related quantum complementarity to the Taoist conception of the yin and the yang. Tao is a continual flow and change in which all phenomena participate. Universal change and connectivity are fundamental components of modern process views. Others have remarked on the correspondence between Eastern world views that regard the world as an illusion, and the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics; this is only one among many possible interpretations, and it reflects philosophical idealism rather than established scientific fact. The concept of complementary opposites is what Taoism has to offer to modern science. It has received diverse and often contradictory interpretations in the context of systems science (Capra, 1975; Xu and Li, 1989; Sabelli, 1989; Rhee, 1996; Bai and Lindberg, 1998).
The Seoul conference of the ISSS provided a suitable framework in which to discuss the union of opposites (Sabelli, 1997). The Korean flag displays a circle divided into two comma-shaped whirls, symbolizing the union of opposites. Each action, each quality, each position, contains, albeit in diminished form, its opposite. It is remarkable that a philosophical symbol is displayed in a national flag. The union of opposites is particularly relevant in a divided country such as Korea, as well as in a divided America with an ambivalent history that starts with the British pirates and recently entailed the bombing of the capital city of an allied country, Panama. Likewise East and West have a contradictory history -- the opium war, the `Yellow Peril', Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, Vietnam ... `Opening markets to free trade' can look like imperialism. Things look different from opposite sides of the globe. Yet, listening to Taoist wisdom, let us not discuss these matters directly, but instead focus on contrasting formulations of the principle developed in Eastern and Western thought, and in North and South America. To engage in dialogue with Eastern philosophy, I take as authoritative descriptions of Tao those made by artist and therapist Gong Shu (1980) and by system thinker Yong Pil Rhee (1996). As for the Americas, I was born and educated in one, and I live in the other.
