The Science of Opposites

The science of opposites where we aim to explore the opposite of every noun in the English language.

Nouns don't tend to have opposites - words like knife, pen, house, car and phone are somehow more complete when you find their logical partner.

Register and play your part in solving one of language's great mysteries. If we all do 1 noun each, we'll have this finished in no time.

The Porsche Boxster first

The Porsche Boxster first appeared as a concept vehicle at the 1995 auto show in Detroit, where is stole the show. At the time, Porsche was desperately ill, having seen costs skyrocket and demand fall. The Boxster – and the 911 that followed – would usher in a new era at Porsche. While the Boxster concept previewed some of the styling themes the new cars would share, it was much leaner, more muscular, and stylish than the production car that would follow. However, with a base price of approximately $35,000, the 1997 Boxster didn’t need good looks to help it off the shelf. Porsche couldn’t keep enough of them in stock as people who never before could afford a Porsche found the dream within reach.More than 120,000 Boxsters have been delivered to customers to date, a figure that – on an annualized basis – is well ahead of Porsche’s plans to move up to 15,000 of the two-seaters each year. Only now demand is starting to cool, and the timing couldn’t be worse.mcse exam questions and answers The world economy is bouncing in and out of recession, and Porsche’s biggest gamble yet – the Cayenne SUV – will arrive in February 2003. In response, the company has given the Boxster a mild facelift, a little more horsepower, and a glass window for the convertible top.Unlike the 911, with which the Boxster shares about 40% of its parts, the smaller Porsche carries its engine between the passenger and rear wheels in true mid-engine style. The 911, on the other hand, hangs a larger displacement, but otherwise similar, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine between the rear wheels and bumper. As a result, the Boxster is arguably the best handling vehicle in the Porsche stable, and certainly the least worrisome when it comes to things like controlling the pendulum effect under extreme cornering loads. In fact, the Boxster has a light directness that helps build a driver’s confidence, and is ably helped by the optional Porsche Stability Management System; a vehicle dynamic control unit that doesn’t intercede at the first sign of trouble, and lets the experienced driver participate in keeping the car under control.Another plus for the little Porsche are the controls. Someone at the company spent a lot of time matching the relative feel of the steering, microsoft exams shifter, brake, clutch and throttle in order to give a seamless driving experience. Even the floor-hinged throttle pedal – normally a bane to my big feet during attempts at heel-and-toe downshifts – wasn’t a problem, never hindering the exercise or demanding more – or less – effort than expected. And the six-speed manual (the non-S Boxster gets a five-speed manual, while both can be had with an optional five-speed automatic) is light and direct, and never gives an indication it will choose a gear other then the one the driver asks for, which is quite a trick considering the convoluted route from the gearshift to the gearbox.Inside, the Boxster get a glovebox and integrated cup holder, a revised layout for the climate control switches, and some minor trim changes. Nothing radical, but needed updates for the carryover structure. And the new glass rear window with defroster is what you’d expect from a car with a base price in this league. But more on price later. The exterior updates are subtle, to say the least. The front and rear fascias are new, as are the twin exhaust pipes, smoked turn signal lenses, and body color side air intakes. In addition, the rear spoiler – which rises automatically at 75 mph and retracts at 50 mph – no longer looks like a car-size version of a metallic bread board designed to negate lift and smooth out high-speed airflow. The 3.2-liter six produces 258 hp in Boxster S form, up eight from last year, and 30 more than found in the base car.network+ It also has a more sonorous exhaust note. The extra power comes from changes in the variable valve timing system and upgrades to the engine management software. Notable improvements, but hardly the kind of stuff that gets a person’s heart rate up.
